What is Generative Engine Optimisation?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring your brand and content so generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews — cite you when answering buyer questions.

The definition.

Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring your brand, your content, and your off-site presence so that generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews — quote you, cite you, or recommend you in their answers.

The shift the discipline addresses: AI engines no longer return a ranked list of links. They generate a written answer, often citing or naming a small number of sources. The brand named in that answer wins the customer; the brands not named are invisible for the query.

GEO is what SEO becomes when the search engine starts answering for itself instead of pointing at links.

Why "generative" matters.

Classic search engines were retrieval engines. The user's job was to read a list of ranked links and click the one that looked most useful. The engine's job was to rank correctly.

Generative engines write the answer themselves. They retrieve sources behind the scenes, but the user reads a paragraph (or bullet list, or table) of generated text. They might never click any of the cited sources. The user experience is fundamentally different — and so the optimisation work is different.

The four engines GEO targets.

  1. 01

    ChatGPT (OpenAI).

The largest by usage. Has a public Reddit partnership. Browses the web on paid tiers. Heavily influenced by Reddit signals and high-authority news editorial.

  2. 02

    Claude (Anthropic).

Heavy use in B2B and developer contexts. No Reddit partnership. Weights long-form authoritative content and editorial sources higher than community discussion.

  3. 03

    Perplexity.

Real-time AI search engine. Citations are visible, every answer shows sources. Weights traditional SEO signals heavily — rank in Google and you're a strong candidate for Perplexity.

  4. 04

    Gemini and AI Overviews (Google).

Direct access to Google's search index. Tightly coupled with traditional SEO signals plus E-E-A-T. The most strategically important AI engine because it sits in front of Google's distribution.

How generative engines pick what to cite.

Each engine works slightly differently — weights vary, partnerships vary, training data cutoffs differ — but four signals dominate across every generative engine:

  1. 01

    High-authority editorial mentions.

News publications, established niche outlets, industry-specific authorities. Both linked and unlinked mentions register. PR backlinks — not paid placements — from real news editorial are the highest-leverage signal across all four engines.

  2. 02

    Community discussion (especially Reddit).

ChatGPT and Perplexity weight Reddit heavily. Gemini reads it. Claude weighs it less but still considers it. Real Reddit mentions in relevant threads scale across most engines.

  3. 03

    Quotable on-page passages.

Generative engines lift passages, not pages. Content broken into self-contained answers (clear question heading, 40–60 word direct answer, supporting context) gets cited far more than walls of marketing copy.

  4. 04

    Topical authority and depth.

Twenty interlinked pages on a topic beat one landing page. Engines reward demonstrated expertise across a cluster, not isolated pages.

The four practical levers.

A GEO programme that works has four pillars:

  • PR Backlinks. Real editorial in national news. Our PR Backlinks service works journalist relationships at the BBC, Daily Mail, Forbes, FT and similar — not paid sponsored content.
  • Reddit SEO. Aged accounts placing your brand in genuine threads. Our Reddit SEO service uses 5–10+ year karma accounts so the placements look natural and survive Reddit moderation.
  • AI-Optimised Content. Pages reverse-engineered from top-ranking competitors and rebuilt with AI-quotable passage structure. Our AI-Optimised Content service handles this at scale.
  • Website Development. Custom-coded sites engineered for AI from day one. Our Website Development service covers builds and rebuilds where the existing site is too slow or messy.

How GEO compounds.

  1. 1

    PR raises authority.

Real news editorial increases your domain authority and seeds your brand in AI training data. Both effects feed every other lever.

  2. 2

    Authority makes content rank.

With higher authority, your AI-optimised content ranks in Google — which gets it picked up by Perplexity, Gemini and the live web search of ChatGPT and Claude.

  3. 3

Ranking content gives Reddit something to link to.

When your brand is mentioned in a Reddit thread, the link points back to your strongest pages. That increases the signal your brand sends to engines.

  4. 4

Reddit teaches engines to associate you with the niche.

Volume of real Reddit mentions in relevant subreddits trains the engines to recommend you when someone asks a buyer question in the niche — which closes the loop.

What GEO is not.

  • It's not a separate channel from SEO. The work overlaps 80%. Anyone selling them as two services is double-billing the overlap.
  • It's not a magic bullet for thin brands. If you have no off-site presence and weak content, GEO won't conjure citations from nothing — it requires building the same foundations as SEO.
  • It's not just "use schema and call it AI SEO". Schema is necessary; it's nowhere near sufficient. The work is in PR, content, Reddit, and technical fundamentals together.
  • It's not a way to game the engines. AI engines are quick to demote spammy patterns. Aged Reddit accounts, real news editorial, genuine content quality are the only durable inputs.

Where GEO is heading.

The discipline will keep evolving. New engines will emerge. The relative weights will shift. The Reddit weighting in ChatGPT might drop if the partnership ends; new partnerships might raise the importance of other platforms. The fundamentals — authority, quality, structure, real off-site signals — will stay.

Frequently asked questions.

Is Generative Engine Optimisation different from AI SEO?

No — the terms describe the same discipline. GEO emphasises the generative nature of the engines (they generate answers, rather than ranking links). AI SEO emphasises the continuity with traditional search engine optimisation. The work is identical; pick whichever label your audience already uses.

What's a "generative engine"?

An AI system that generates a written answer to a question, often citing or naming sources, instead of returning a list of ranked links. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews are all generative engines. The shift from "ranked link list" to "generated answer" is what makes GEO distinct from classic SEO.

Who invented the term GEO?

The term gained traction in academic research papers and SEO industry circles through 2023–2024 as ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar engines started gaining commercial traction. It's not a single inventor's term — it emerged organically as the industry needed a name for the discipline.

What does a GEO programme actually look like?

Four levers, run as one programme. (1) PR-led backlinks at high-DA news publications. (2) Reddit footprint via aged accounts in real threads. (3) AI-optimised on-site content structured into quotable passages. (4) Technical website work to ensure AI engines can crawl, parse and quote your site cleanly. Most brands run all four together.

Should I rebrand my SEO programme to GEO?

Probably not. The work overlaps too much for a clean rebrand to be honest. The better positioning — explain to clients that AI is changing how SEO is measured, that you've added GEO-specific layers (Reddit, AI-quotable content, schema) to the existing programme, and that the work is now both. Don't pretend you've thrown out SEO and started something new — you haven't.
